The interior of Toyota trucks changes about as often as the exterior designs do. Depending on the cab style of your Tacoma or Tundra, you might be looking at one of many different seating combinations. Luckily, Toyota truck seat identification is straightforward, making it easier to choose the right seating options and configurations — especially when selecting from ShearComfort’s wide range of custom-fit solutions
To help you identify the different features of your truck’s interior, we have gathered together (in one place) the key features that may factor into choosing the custom-fitted seat cover of your dreams.
Toyota Truck Seat Identification: Important Features of Your Toyota Truck Seats
Your Toyota truck interior has different features that may play a huge role in determining what seat covers will work best for your seats. Features like headrests, consoles, seatbelt placement, and even the seat itself can influence the fit of the seat cover.
Do You Need to Consider Your Truck’s Headrests?
Headrests are also known as head restraints. The primary function of headrests is for safety, not for comfort. You will see four primary headrest types in vehicles – integrated (fixed), adjustable, active, and automatic adjusting. We will briefly touch on each one so that you can identify which you have in your Toyota truck.
Integrated (Fixed) Headrests
Integrated or fixed headrests may also be referred to as molded headrests. The back of the seat often forms these headrests and is not height adjustable. The headrest cannot be removed from the back of the seat, and if there is a distinct separation between the seat and the headrest, it will require special tools.
Adjustable Headrests
Adjustable headrests move up and down to preferred heights and angles to accommodate the driver or passenger. These headrests can often be removed completely off the seat and then reattached easily.
Active Headrests
Active headrests look a lot like adjustable headrests, but they are designed differently. These headrests can adjust during a collision to provide optimal levels of safety for the seated occupant.
Automatically Adjusting Headrests
Automatically adjusting headrests will move and adjust as the seat is moved. So if more than one person drives the car, the headrest will adjust as the driver adjusts the seat. The same applies to the passengers and so on.
Does Your Truck Have a Center Console or Integrated Seatbelt?
Depending on the type of back seats you have in your truck, you may find yourself up against a console, a solid armrest, or an armrest with cup holders. A center console may be found in the front of the truck and the rear of the vehicle. A fold-down console provides storage space and cupholders in the rear, fitting securely into the backseat when folded back up.
Solid armrests and solid armrests with cupholders are primarily found in the back of the truck and often with a 60/40 or 40/20/40 configuration. The armrest can be put securely up to offer an additional third seat in between the two primary backseat passengers.
In many circumstances where the back seat is split, the middle seatbelt will be incorporated into the back part of the seat. This is called an integrated seatbelt. Most seatbelts (especially in the front) are not integrated; they are attached to the inside framework of the car. Knowing if you have an integrated seatbelt will help when determining the type of seat cover you need.
ShearComfort’s line of Toyota truck seat covers offer coverage like Imitation Leather, which looks and feels like real leather (without the cost). These are water-resistant covers that provide the utmost protection for your seats.
Identifying the Type of Toyota Truck Seats You Have
You may only refer to your seats as “front” and “back,” but the truth is, there is so much more to your truck’s seats than this. There are different types of truck seats that may change how a seat cover fits. Learning what type of seat you have and what they mean can help you pick the right covers the first time.
The different types you may hear referred to in a Toyota truck include bucket seats, bench seats, split seats, and in some circumstances, jump seats. We are going to dive in and see what type of seats you have in your truck.
Do You Have Bucket Seats?
Bucket seats are described as two equal and individual seats, with a space in between them. The space may be used to house a permanent console or for another purpose. The driver and front passenger will often have bucket seats, but it is not uncommon for them to show up in the second row of a truck.
As part of Toyota truck seat identification, it’s important to note that if the front (or back) seat is a bucket seat with built-in folding armrests, these are referred to as Captain Chairs. If you are unsure, a bucket seat has room for one person to sit and no more.
Do You Have a Solid Bench Seat?
Discontinued single cab Toyota trucks and older models are more likely to have a solid bench seat. These are different from split seats, which we will address in a moment. A bench seat does not have any division to it. It is one solid piece and cannot be folded.
Do You Have Split Seats?
Split seats are like bench seats but, they have a split in them. These come in two varieties – 60/40 and 40/20/40. It is easy to determine what type you have. Look at your back seat. If you have a 60/40 split, the back will have a section that takes up 60% of the area, and the remaining will be 40% of the entire seat.
The 40/20/40 is split up into three different seats. The two outer portions are 40%, with the middle (third seat) taking up 20% of the area. In these situations, you will often find the incorporated center console in the back of the seat, which folds down.
Knowing which kind of seat split you may have is a key part of Toyota truck seat identification and will help you choose the right seat cover for your truck. ShearComfort offers a full line of Toyota truck seat covers that will fit your specific design, including custom-fitted Neo-Supreme. These seat covers come in over 18 different color combinations and are great for everyday use in your Toyota Tacoma or Tundra.
What are Jump Seats?
Jump seats are the type of seats used in smaller cabs. These seats fold down in the back and are smaller than normal seating. These are more common in older model trucks.
