Dodge Truck Models and Cab Sizes: In-Depth Look

Posted by The ShearComfort Team

The first Dodge Truck Models were brought to the market in 1918, done to keep up with the automotive industry and Chevrolet’s truck model release. At this time, the idea of creating the truck was bold on the part of both manufacturers – a bold idea that has paid off well to date.

Over the years, Dodge Truck Models have undergone some serious changes. Dodge trucks are known for their durability and power, from models like the D-series to Ram becoming a stand-alone brand. The Dakota was also another popular Dodge Truck Model for several years.

In 1993, Dodge began to incorporate the driver’s side airbag into manufacturing. The change came two years before Chevrolet began installing them and seven years before the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) deemed them mandatory. Safety is of high priority for Dodge, as well as other car and truck manufacturers. ShearComfort gets on board with these safety requirements and creates custom-made seat covers that adhere to the highest safety standards for Dodge Truck Models.

Dodge Truck Models and Their Cab Sizes

There are four primary cab sizes with Dodge Truck Models – regular, crew, quad, and mega. The one cab with the most profound difference is the regular cab, but the crew, quad, and mega cabs have very few differences. Most of the differences with the crew, quad, and mega cabs are with the bed length.

Regular Cab

The regular cab on Dodge Truck Models is much like any other regular cab. Depending on the seat configuration (bucket or bench), it can fit two or three passengers. The regular cab only offers two doors – driver and passenger side – and may offer very little room behind the seats for storage.

Quad, Crew, and Mega Cabs

The order (by size) of the remaining cabs for Dodge Truck Models are quad, crew, and mega. All three of these offer truck owners the same basic amenities – four doors, second-row bench seats, seating up to six, and the ability to fold the seat for additional storage. The difference is the length of the bed versus the legroom. The quad cab has a smaller interior area with a longer bed, but the crew cab has a larger interior area with a shorter bed style. The mega cab offers a larger interior area with a larger bed configuration.

Understanding Dodge Truck Trim Levels

Since the 2010 model year, there has been a distinct change in how Dodge Truck Models are branded. You are likely familiar with the “Ram” nameplate, which was originally called a Dodge Ram pickup truck. The Ram nameplate absorbed the Dodge Ram and Dodge Dakota truck lines into their own sector within the Dodge manufacturing company, simply taking the name “Ram Trucks.” To understand the different trim levels, you have to understand the different Dodge Truck Models – essentially pre-Ram and post-Ram.

Dodge Dakota Trim Levels

There are three generations of Dodge Dakota trucks before they were absorbed into the “Ram” moniker. The first generation ran from 1987 to 1996, the second from 1997 to 2004, and the third from 2005 to 2011. The first generation featured such trim levels as SE, LE, SLT, and a Sport model. The LE, later replaced by the SLT during the same generation, was considered the top-of-the-line model.

The release of the Dakota Sport featured:

  • AM/FM stereo with cassette player

  • Carpeted logo floor mats

  • Center armrest bench seat

  • Deluxe charcoal cloth interior

  • Deluxe wipers

  • Color-keyed leather-wrapped sport steering wheel

  • Floor carpet

  • Dual remote-controlled outside mirrors

  • Bodyside tape stripes

  • 15-inch aluminum wheels

  • Gauge packet

The second generation switched it up, offering a lot more trim levels than the years prior. These included:

  • ST – the base model

  • Sport – “step-up” Dakota model, featured everything the ST plus additional features

  • SXT – introduced in 2001 as the mid-range model

  • SXT-Plus – was added to the line with value-added features

  • SLT – top-line Dakota model

  • SLT-Plus – top-line plus value-added features

  • R/T – high-performance trim level

The third generation kept the ST, SLT, and SXT but added packages that included the Big Horn, Laramie, Lonestar, and SLT Laramie.

Dodge Ram Trim Levels

Before taking only the Ram name, the Dodge Ram came in a few trim levels – Laramie, SLT, ST, Sport, and TRX. Much like the Dakota, these each offered base to high-performance characteristics. Some of these followed the line as it transitioned to one brand name.

  • Tradesman (Tradesman Express) – Base trim level

  • ST – same features as the Tradesman, but includes items such as heated mirrors

  • SLT – Additions like LCD screen, satellite radio, remote keyless entry – considered higher-end of the base selection

  • Sport – Mid-range selection

  • HFE – Offers additional features not found in the Sport model

  • Laramie – Beginning of the top-line trim levels of the Ram

  • Rebel – Mid-range of the top-line, features more than the Laramie

  • Longhorn – Top-line and high-performance Ram trim level

Dodge Truck Models come not only in various trim levels but also have configurations that accompany these different trims. For example, trucks can be front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, and four-wheel drive. They may have a manual transmission or an automatic one. There are several factors about the truck itself that you have to consider when determining which one you have.

The important thing to think about when looking at Dodge truck seat covers is the year and trim level because even though some trims may have carried over year to year, there could be minuscule differences that could change how your seat cover fits. That is why ShearComfort looks at all your model, year, and trim factors before determining the right fit. We make sure that the Neo-Supreme seat covers you pick out for protection from daily wear not only fit snug but will provide the amount of protection you expect for all Dodge Truck Models.
